In accordance with Va. Code § 2.2-3708.2, Chapter 1283 of the 2020 Acts of the Virginia General Assembly,  and Governor Northam’s Executive Order 51 dated March 12, 2020, the Board of Visitors of the University of Virginia will meet by electronic communication means on Monday, May 18, 2020 from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. eastern time to discuss with University leadership specific plans regarding the University’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic and related matters. The agenda is attached.

An electronic meeting is permitted when the Governor has declared a state of emergency in accordance with Va. Code § 44-147.17, provided that (i) the nature of the declared emergency makes it impracticable or unsafe to assemble in a single location and (ii) the purpose of the meeting is to discuss or transact the business statutorily required or necessary to continue operations and the discharge of its lawful purposes, duties, and responsibilities.  The Rector, in consultation with the President of the University, has determined that it would be both impracticable and unsafe to assemble in a single location for this meeting.  The purpose of the meeting is for the Board of Visitors to receive emergency-related briefings on, and to discuss with University leadership, University operations and academic, financial, Medical Center, and student-related matters.

The meeting will be held in open and closed session. The open session may be accessed through this link:  https://youtube.com/watch?v=KaizNGNNx5U.  Should there be an interruption in service during this meeting, please call Debbie Rinker at 434-924-7081.

Following a motion and vote of the Board of Visitors to convene in closed session, members of the Board and University officials will leave the open session and proceed in closed session. Following the closed session, the Board of Visitors will return to open session to certify that only public business matters lawfully exempted from open meeting requirements and which were identified in the motion authorizing the closed session were heard, discussed, or considered in closed session.

The meeting time is approximate; the Board cannot always anticipate changes in the length of its meetings.

There will be no opportunity for unscheduled comments from the public during this meeting.
